Concord man convicted of 2023 rape in Sandwich

Concord man – Elie Jammal, 73, was convicted of rape and indecent assault and battery for attacks on a 20-year-old in a Sandwich restaurant bathroom in 2023. He received 13½ to 15 years in state prison for the rape conviction and 5 years of probation for the assault convict
On a summer day in Sandwich, a 20-year-old woman left her table to use the restroom. Minutes later, she was in a hallway she didn’t know, facing a man she had never met—Elie Jammal—who prosecutors said then escalated the situation all the way into the women’s bathroom.
Jammal, 73, a Concord man, was convicted Friday in Barnstable County court of one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault and battery of a person over the age of 14, according to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office.
The court sentenced Jammal to 13½ to 15 years in state prison for the rape conviction, followed by 5 years of probation for the assault conviction.
Prosecutors said the incident began on July 9, 2023, when the victim was dining at a restaurant in Sandwich. She left her table to use the restroom and, in the hallway, encountered Jammal, whom she did not know.
The Cape & Islands DA’s office said Jammal made a suggestive comment. pushed her up against the hallway wall. sexually assaulted her. and demanded that she give him her phone number. The victim escaped into the women’s restroom, but prosecutors said Jammal followed her inside and sexually assaulted her again.
After Jammal left the restroom, the DA’s office said, the victim began calling for help. Because she had been gone from her table for a while, a family friend went to check on her and found her hiding in one of the bathroom stalls.
The victim’s mother and another family friend confronted Jammal outside the restaurant, and prosecutors said he claimed she had come on to him. They called police, but the DA’s office said Jammal had driven away by the time officers arrived.
In November 2023, Jammal was indicted on the charges for which he was later convicted.
Before sentencing, the court noted that he was not at all intoxicated. The DA’s office said the court also found his actions were motivated purely by “a shocking sense of entitlement.”
Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois posted on Facebook after the verdict. describing what the victim went through and what she did in court. “A 20 year old woman was having dinner with her family. She left the table to use the facilities and she was sexually attacked by a 70 year old man in the hallway. Her bravery to confront him in Court in front of a jury was exemplary,” Galibois wrote. He added, “Thank you to my team and police investigators for believing in her and delivering justice.”.
Jammal’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday morning.

70?? That’s just sick. Glad he got convicted.
Wait so it was in a restaurant bathroom like… how does a guy even end up there if she was just going to pee? I’m not saying she did anything wrong obviously but the details are wild.
13 1/2 to 15 years sounds like a lot but also feels like not enough for rape. Also probation?? why is probation part of it if he assaulted her in the bathroom twice. I don’t get how sentencing works.
I saw something about this on Facebook and I thought it was just like indecent exposure or something, but nah it’s rape. Still, at 73 years old I feel like people should’ve stopped him faster or whatever, like why was it taking minutes? Anyway this whole “entitlement” thing… sounds like one of those guys who thinks rules don’t apply.
