Observers have said the legal cases against the CHP—mostly centered on corruption allegations—are aimed at neutralizing the party ahead of the next election. Erdoğan has ruled Turkey since 2003. first as prime minister and then as president. and his electoral record took a hit in 2019 when the CHP seized control of several major cities in local elections. In Istanbul, İmamoğlu emerged as a widely viewed figure with the charisma to challenge Erdoğan.
Inside the standoff, local media reported that a crowd gathered outside the office that Özel claimed were not CHP members but had been sent to intimidate. Police presence was steadily growing since morning.
Kılıçdaroğlu’s lawyer, Celal Çelik, sent a request to the Ankara police to assist in vacating the building. The Ankara Governor’s office released a statement approving the request.
Sunday afternoon was set aside for a potential breakthrough. The rival teams were supposed to meet to figure out a way out of the impasse, but the court-ordered administration still could not gain entry as the standoff held.
