Cardinals have reason to play Carson Beck in Week 1

After releasing Kyler Murray, Arizona is likely to start Jacoby Brissett in Week 1, but Carson Beck could get a chance early this season as the Cardinals search for a long-term QB answer.

The Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback search just got louder this offseason, and it could lead to a surprising early-season look at Carson Beck.

Arizona released former first-round pick Kyler Murray, ending a chapter that had stretched well beyond expectations.. Murray now has an opportunity to rehab his career with the Minnesota Vikings and head coach Kevin O’Connell. who has helped rebuild quarterbacks such as Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones in recent seasons.

The Cardinals. meanwhile. enter the season with four quarterbacks on the roster: Jacoby Brissett. Gardner Minshew II. Kedon Slovis and Beck.. Brissett, 33, is the most likely starter for Week 1 after going 1-11 as Arizona’s starter last season.. He threw for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Still, there is an argument for Arizona to consider Beck sooner rather than later.. The Cardinals selected Beck out of Miami in the third round of this year’s draft.. Before he suffered a ulnar collateral ligament injury at Georgia in 2024. there had been enough projection around his talent that he was considered a possible first-round pick for the 2025 draft.

ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss suggested the Cardinals could start Beck as early as Week 1, though he framed that as a long shot. He noted that any change to the starter would more likely come later in the season, depending on how the team performs.

“Beck could be thrust into the lineup at any point; midseason if the Cardinals struggle out of the gate or November/December if the season is lost. ” Weinfuss wrote.. “If Arizona falls out of playoff contention. don’t be surprised if the team throws him out there to see what it has entering the 2027 draft.

“While starting Week 1 is a long shot, there’s a distinct possibility of Beck playing at any point from Week 2 on.”

For the Cardinals, the immediate value of getting Beck on the field would be evaluation. Beck’s adjustment period is not expected to be instantaneous, and it could take a few games for him to settle into the speed of the NFL.

Arizona may also be looking at this as more than a short-term gamble. Even with uncertainty at quarterback, the organization retains flexibility: if Beck does not become the answer as QB1, the Cardinals could pivot again later to a quarterback class projected to be loaded in 2027.

For now, Brissett appears positioned for the opening start. But given the overhaul around Arizona’s quarterback room and the stakes that come with building for the next draft cycle, Beck’s path back into meaningful reps could begin earlier than many fans would assume.

  1. I dont understand why they keep starting Brissett honestly the guy went like 1 and 11 last year and they just keep running him out there like nothing happened. Beck should just start from day one and get the experience thats how you build a quarterback anyway.

  2. This is all because of the injury thing from Georgia right, like if he never got hurt he wouldve been a first round pick but now theyre just kind of hiding him on the bench and hoping nobody notices. I feel bad for the kid honestly he worked his whole life for this and now hes stuck behind Brissett and Gardner Minshew which like no offense but those two arent exactly going to the hall of fame anytime soon. Arizona has been a mess at quarterback for years and years and honestly even before Kyler it was just one bad decision after another so I guess nothing really changes.

  3. So basically what this is saying is that Kyler Murray went to the Vikings and now Kevin OConnell is gonna fix him the same way he fixed Sam Darnold which means Arizona basically gave away a franchise quarterback for nothing and now theyre out here hoping some third round rookie from Miami works out which honestly it probably wont but whatever I stopped trusting the Cardinals front office like four years ago anyway. They always do this thing where they draft someone and hype them up and then by week 6 everybodys forgotten about them. Remember when they had Josh Rosen and just completely wasted him. Same thing is gonna happen here I guarantee it. Also why is Minshew even still on a roster anywhere no offense.
