Bordeaux-Begles demolish Leinster 41-19 to retain Champions Cup

Bordeaux-Begles tore Leinster apart in a dominant 41-19 victory to secure back-to-back Champions Cup crowns at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao. Leinster, who have now lost five Champions Cup finals since 2019, were totally outplayed in the Spanish heat and, despite moving 7-0 ahead, fell 35-7 behind by the half-time break. Indeed, Bordeaux played with a pace, skill and power that Leinster were no match for, scoring tries through scrum-half Maxime Lucu, wings Pablo Uberti and Louis Bielle-Biarrey (two) and centre Yoram Moefana. Lucu converted

all five off the tee in a marvellous kicking performance and also added two second-half penalties. Leinster scored tries through wing Tommy O’Brien, lock Joe McCarthy and centre Garry Ringrose, but were left to reflect on their heaviest final defeat. 1. I guess they still won even after being up 7-0? Makes no sense to me, like how do you go from leading to down 35-7 at halftime. Sounds like the heat just ruined Leinster or something.

  2. Maxime Lucu kicking everything is probably why. But also how is this “back-to-back” if Leinster lost finals since 2019?? I’m confused, I thought it was like a different tournament year or whatever.

  3. Leinster “heavy defeat” title makes it sound like something else happened?? Like I saw somewhere Montpellier got mentioned and Ulster too, so are they in the same match or am I mixing up Challenge Cup with this Champions thing? Either way Bordeaux-Begles apparently came in hot and didn’t let up.
