When Disney used the CinemaCon 2026 stage to roll out its first extended look at Avengers: Doomsday, it wasn’t just teasing storylines. It quietly exposed a hierarchy.
The studio confirmed the official billing order during the Walt Disney Studios presentation. and the way X-Men actors are placed on the cast list has already become its own headline. Channing Tatum is billed 11th. Ian McKellen follows at 13th. James Marsden takes 15th, and Patrick Stewart comes in at 16th. Further down, Kelsey Grammer is 22nd, Alan Cumming is 25th, and Rebecca Romijn lands at 28th.
The order matters to fans because these names carry history—especially for an X-Men franchise that launched the modern superhero movie boom 26 years ago. But the credit line also tells a more grounded Hollywood story: who is currently pulling the most weight in negotiations. and how that weight shows up before the movie ever hits theaters.
Tatum’s placement sits at the center of that debate. He reprises his role as Gambit after his scene-stealing debut in Deadpool & Wolverine. His billing at 11th has him ahead of Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Patrick Stewart on the official order.
McKellen’s number—13th—places him above both Marsden and Stewart as well. He returns as Magneto for the first time since 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. His position gains extra attention because he and Stewart have shared screen space across the X-Men films for more than two decades. and both command deep industry respect.
Marsden is billed 15th, back as Cyclops. He originated the role in Bryan Singer’s 2000 X-Men film. For many viewers, it’s the surprise slot: Marsden has continued working after X-Men, including Westworld, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Jury Duty. Yet his billing stays below Tatum and McKellen.
Stewart, meanwhile, is listed at 16th, returning as Professor Charles Xavier. The role he most recently played is Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Kelsey Grammer is next at 22nd as Beast. He returns after appearing as Hank McCoy in X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006. making a cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past. and then showing up again with a surprise post-credits cameo in The Marvels. Alan Cumming takes 25th as Nightcrawler—his Avengers: Doomsday return marking a comeback more than 20 years after he last played Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United in 2003. Rebecca Romijn closes out the X-Men group at 28th as Mystique. reprising the role she played as the original Mystique in the first three X-Men films from 2000 to 2006.
If the order feels like it’s doing more than listing names. that’s because it has a long history in Hollywood: billing placement often reflects the leverage behind the deal rather than the final narrative weight of a character on screen. Marvel Studios has used the top of the credits to signal box office pull in the past—for example. Robert Downey Jr. has held the number one spot on every Avengers film he appeared in for that exact reason. And even within this film’s cast. the X-Men actors aren’t placed in the top 7 or 8 of the order. even though their characters could still end up with major impact in the finished movie.
The credit placement also exposes how timing can steer perception. Channing Tatum’s current momentum—tying his Gambit return to the wide attention surrounding Deadpool & Wolverine—comes through in the fact that his name sits above Stewart’s on the billing. Stewart’s legendary career doesn’t seem to be fully reflected by his slot here; he hasn’t starred in many noteworthy films since his Multiverse of Madness appearance in 2022.
A similar tension runs through the McKellen-versus-Stewart comparison. McKellen is an Oscar nominee and one of the most respected actors of his generation. Alan Cumming’s and Rebecca Romijn’s placements follow a different logic: their X-Men returns are framed by gaps and shifting career lanes. Cumming’s long absence since 2003’s X2: X-Men United makes his return feel like a long-awaited comeback. while Romijn’s most recent work has leaned heavily into television—such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds—which likely played a role in how she was ranked low on this specific cast list.
The path of Kelsey Grammer’s Beast return is also visible in the billing. His X-Men presence has included his 2006 role, a cameo in Days of Future Past, and a surprise post-credits moment in The Marvels—far from the kind of sustained starring run that usually pushes names higher.
Across the X-Men group in Avengers: Doomsday, the credits line reads like a map of today’s bargaining power—less about how fans remember these characters, and more about how each actor’s recent visibility, momentum, and negotiation strength translated into a specific place on the official order.
For now. the movie remains a mystery—set to bring together heroes from three different universes. including those from the original X-Men franchise that helped define a generation of superhero cinema. But the billing order already tells one story with unusual clarity: in this kind of blockbuster. the stars don’t just fight monsters. They also fight for their spot in the credits.
Avengers: Doomsday Disney CinemaCon 2026 Marvel Studios billing order Channing Tatum Gambit Ian McKellen Magneto James Marsden Cyclops Patrick Stewart Professor Charles Xavier Kelsey Grammer Beast Alan Cumming Nightcrawler Rebecca Romijn Mystique Deadpool & Wolverine X-Men: Days of Future Past X-Men Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness The Marvels
So they put Tatum 11th like that’s the real fight? billing order don’t mean nothing lol.
I’m confused, is this saying Ian McKellen is actually in it more than Patrick Stewart? because the numbers look backwards to me if they’re both Magneto/whatever. also Disney loves doing this negotiation chess thing.
People keep saying billing order = star power but it also gotta be contract stuff. Like why is Stewart only 16th? he’s literally the iconic one. unless they’re cutting his scenes down which would be kinda sad. but then again maybe “re-shuffle credits” means they just moved names around for the extended look.
CinemaCon 2026 and they’re already ranking who gets what spot… I swear the movie isn’t even out and it’s already drama. Channing Tatum 11th for Gambit and McKellen 13th for Magneto like ok sure, but I thought Stewart was in charge or whatever. Also I saw someone say this is basically Avengers: Doomsday vs X-Men and I don’t even know what that means. Sounds like another “who negotiated hardest” situation not a story leak.
