Aldergrove fair returns June 1 with seniors services

The Aldergrove Seniors Community Fair is returning to the Royal Canadian Legion #265, giving seniors a chance to meet service providers in their community. Hosted by Langley Seniors in Action, Langley Meals on Wheels, and the Aldergrove legion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, June 1, the event brings together local groups and businesses focused on seniors’ wellness and independence. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Executive director Shannon Woykin, of Langley Meals on Wheels, said the fair helps create connections within the community.
“It is an important community event for us because it allows us to connect directly with seniors, caregivers, families, volunteers, and other service providers in a welcoming and accessible way.” At the fair, Meals on Wheels staff will be speaking with visitors about meal delivery, food security, and other programs that help older adults and others such as people recovering from surgery. “Events like the Aldergrove Seniors Fair help us continue to remind seniors that they are not alone and that support is available in
their community,” Woykin shared. Langley Seniors in Action chair Paul Crump said organizers hope to bring valuable resources directly into the community to “kick-off” Seniors Week. “The original idea was to make information available to the seniors in Aldergrove, because we felt that they are probably forgotten because of firstly the distance between Aldergrove and the rest of Langley,” he recalled. “Transportation is not the best for people in Aldergrove to go into Langley for functions that would provide them with information and education that
seniors would be interested in.” This year’s event has expanded significantly, with about 32 participants expected, up from about 20 to 22 last year. “We’re not only just looking at service agencies that would serve seniors’ needs, but also the for-profit world that will deal with seniors’ needs,” he said. Helping seniors learn about available supports can make it easier for them to remain independent longer. “With the push to make sure that a senior stays in their domicile as long as possible, they also
need to know what is around in order to support them to do that,” Crump said. The fair is free to attend. Speakers at the event include Langley RCMP at 10:15 a.m., ICBC at 11 a.m., TransLink at 11:45 a.m., and Langley Division of Family Practice at 1 p.m. For more information, people can follow Langley Seniors in Action on Facebook or visit Langley Seniors in Action.

Free fair for seniors? Finally something good, hope they have buses there.
So is this like a farmer’s market thing or more like doctor stuff? I saw wheelchair accessible so I figured there would be snacks too lol.
Why is RCMP speaking at a seniors fair… like are they planning to arrest people? Also ICBC at 11 sounds random, I thought that was insurance for cars not health.
32 participants this year?? Last year it was 20-22, so basically like 10 more tables, woo. Still, I like the idea, but transportation being “not best” is kind of confusing because Aldergrove isn’t that far, just drive? Anyway, glad it’s at the legion and free. If TransLink is there then maybe they’ll finally explain fares to my grandma.
