Actresses turned down iconic roles—then watched history move

actresses who – From Julia Roberts’ near-castings to women like Sandra Bullock, Jodie Foster, and Emily Blunt describing the roles that slipped away, these actresses share the moments they said no—and how close Hollywood came to looking different.

By the time Vivian Ward was cast in Pretty Woman, the movie had already locked in the kind of stardom the audience instantly recognizes. But behind the glamour is a messier truth: a lot of those “meant-to-be” roles were offered to other actresses first.

Some of them walked away for reasons that sound painfully specific—time constraints. scheduling conflicts. a problem with the script. or discomfort with how a story frames real people. Others never got to fully say no, because a different project pulled them in. Either way, the casting choices that shaped modern screens weren’t always the first ones on the table.

Sandra Bullock’s Oscar-winning turn as Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side (2009) is one of those careers that feels impossible to imagine differently. But the real-life Tuohy confirmed in 2020 that “My part was completely written for Julia Roberts by 20th Century Fox. She was locked. she was loaded. everything was great.” Tuohy added that Roberts realized there was “a time constraint” because John Lee [Hancock. writer/director] was “very specific of how he wanted to film The Blind Side.” Tuohy said Roberts “had already had two commitments” and “could not fit that time frame. ” and that “they worked; they tried to juggle and it just didn’t happen.”.

In 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook, Anne Hathaway was slated to play Tiffany, a role that ultimately went to Jennifer Lawrence. Hathaway’s path changed after she reportedly had “creative differences” with the director, which led her to cede the spot to Lawrence.

Not every near-miss is about career logistics. Thandiwe Newton. discussing Charlie’s Angels. said she was originally set to be in the movie but was put off by what the filmmakers’ implications suggested about her “based on her appearance and her race.” Newton told Vulture in 2020. “I didn’t want to be put in a position where I was objectified. That just didn’t feel good.” She added. “This is a long time ago anyway. ” and said she would “disrupt rather than run away. ” describing it as “probably the change in me.” Lucy Liu still landed the part in the film.

Amanda Seyfried’s decision also became public in a way that highlighted how quickly a role can vanish. In an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in 2025. Seyfried opened up about turning down the role of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. She cited multiple reasons. including that it was filmed in London. it involved working with a green screen. and she was concerned it would “bomb.” Seyfried said. “I don’t regret anything. any decision that I made. ” and emphasized. “I made it for myself.” She added. “In the moment that I made it. it was good for me then. and it’s good for me now.” Zoë Saldaña landed the role.

Sandra Bullock’s second brush with a major part came in Million Dollar Baby. Bullock and Hilary Swank both now define different eras of the movie’s fame. but Bullock said she almost portrayed Maggie Fitzgerald first—while also pushing hard for the film to be made. Bullock told The Times of London in 2018. “I don’t know if they weren’t interested in female boxers. or whether they were just not interested in me playing a female boxer.” She added. “I’m not sure if that was sexism. I just barreled on through. I had blinkers on for most of my career. It was only much later that I realized. ‘Oh my God. I’m being treated this way because I’m female.’” The movie was ultimately made by Clint Eastwood. starring Swank.

A medical drama audition could have rewritten another kind of TV history. Grey’s Anatomy’s Izzie Stevens went to Katherine Heigl, but Lost’s Yunjin Kim auditioned for the role. Kim wasn’t offered Izzie Stevens. but she received a callback—then realized she was “already deep in talks with the makers of Lost.” She said she initially thought she’d still go to the Grey’s callback “to keep her options open. ” but “in the end she didn’t. ” which the story notes as a “technically” turning down the role even if it “didn’t actually come to that.”.

Then there’s the string of actresses tied directly to Pretty Woman’s Vivian Ward—an iconic role that Julia Roberts ultimately landed. Molly Ringwald admitted in a 2023 interview with The Guardian that she turned it down. Ringwald said. “Julia Roberts was wonderful in it. but I didn’t really like the story. ” adding. “Even then. I felt like there was something icky about it.”.

Jennifer Jason Leigh also passed. telling The Telegraph in 2016 that she felt the movie was “a recruitment film. like Top Gun but for prostitutes. ” and that it “made it into a Cinderella story.” Diane Lane explained on Andy Cohen in 2017 (via Hello!) that she passed because the storyline was “a bit much for her. ” describing it as “a very different [film]” and saying it “kind of got Disney-fied and it turned out to be a feel-good movie.” Lane also recalled. “Originally. this crazy [woman] was kicked out of a rolling limo in the end because she was delusional that she thought this guy was in love with her. She was only hired for the weekend.”.

Daryl Hannah offered the sharpest moral objection. In a 2013 interview with Hindustan Times. Hannah said turning down the role felt wrong because “The entire idea about glorifying a woman for becoming a p******** and then meeting your prince charming to go on to live happily forever sounded wrong to me.” Hannah added. “You cannot glorify p******** like that — it is not a preferred career choice. ” and argued it was “really telling and tough circumstances” that “force you to become one” without the certainty of a “prince charming.” Roberts still took the part.

Other casting “maybes” around Vivian Ward include Meg Ryan, described as a top contender, and a broader belief that many women were considered before Roberts.

The Silence of the Lambs carried its own version of a “no” that mattered. Michelle Pfeiffer was a top contender to play Clarice Starling. but she turned it down because she didn’t like the script. Pfeiffer told The New Yorker in 2021, “With Silence of the Lambs, I was trepidatious. There was such evil in that film. ” and said she was “uncomfortable with that ending” because “I didn’t want to put that out into the world.” Jodie Foster nabbed the role instead.

Emily Blunt’s near-miss was a role with superhero gravity. Blunt was offered Black Widow in Iron Man 2. but she said the reason she didn’t do it came down to prior commitments. She told Howard Stern in 2021 (via People), “I was contracted to do Gulliver’s Travels. I didn’t want to do Gulliver’s Travels.” Blunt described it as “a bit of a heartbreaker. ” saying she “take[s] such pride in the decisions” she makes and “they mean so much” to her. Scarlett Johansson ended up playing the part.

Christina Applegate had a different regret—one that came from passing on Legally Blonde. Applegate said she regretted turning down the role of Elle Woods and told Vanity Fair in 2023. “I wouldn’t toy with the idea of Legally Blonde because it felt too fresh getting out of Married…With Children. It was very similar on paper,” before adding, “Um, big f****** mistake. I’d have Witherspoon money!”.

Some of these decisions were simple and blunt in their phrasing. Katie Holmes was offered the title role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer but turned it down.

Gwyneth Paltrow once revealed she was one of the top two contenders for Rose DeWitt in Titanic. Paltrow said, “I would throw a fit if I turned that down!” when Howard Stern told her, “What good is it to hold onto roles?” As the film’s history shows, Kate Winslet ended up taking the lead.

Emma Watson almost became another Emma on La La Land. Watson said she was up for the role early into pre-production. but she was already committed to Beauty and the Beast. She explained. “I knew I had horse training. I knew I had dancing. I knew I had three months of singing ahead of me. and I knew I had to be in London to really do that. ” and said. “And this wasn’t a movie I could just kind of parachute into.” She added that it “just didn’t work out” scheduling-wise. Emma Watson didn’t do La La Land; Emma Stone did.

Some turning-down stories arrive with a press-driven label like “circa,” but still point to a specific moment. A report in Variety said Angelina Jolie turned down the lead role in 2013’s Gravity “circa 2010.” In the end, the role went to Sandra Bullock.

Kate Hudson also looked back at a franchise-shaped alternative. In 2025, Hudson told Andy Cohen (via Variety) that she turned down the part of Mary Jane Watson in 2002’s Spider-Man. Hudson said. “It’s one of those things where I look back like. ‘That would have been nice to be in a Spider-Man movie. ‘” and then offered a trade-off: “But at the same time. I did a movie called Four Feathers. I got to meet Heath Ledger who became a very good friend and I got an experience that I would have never had.”.

Beyond the film scripts, there were also big-name acting regrets. Madonna told Jimmy Fallon in 2021 (via W) that she regretted turning down Catwoman for Batman Returns, saying, “I regret that I turned down Catwoman.” She added, “That was pretty fierce.” Michelle Pfeiffer got the role instead.

Cher’s regret connected to a chance at a classic. Cher was offered the role of Thelma in Thelma & Louise, which went to Geena Davis. Cher used her regret over the decision to encourage her fans to “say yes” to opportunities in life during a live Q&A in 2024 (via HuffPost). The story notes she was “stupid” enough to decline.

Jodie Foster’s name shows up in a different kind of “what if” story. one tied to a galaxy far. far away. In 2024. Foster revealed to Jimmy Fallon (via The Guardian) that she was actually offered the part of Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy but had to turn it down due to a scheduling conflict. Foster said. “They were going for a younger Princess Leia but I had a conflict. ” and explained. “I was doing a Disney movie and I just didn’t want to pull out of the Disney movie because I was already under contract.”.

The through-line in these stories is clear, even when the reasons differ. A schedule can pull an actress away. A script can make the discomfort stick. Sometimes a role is declined because of the way a character would be framed on-screen. And sometimes. the “turn down” is less a dramatic final decision and more a door that closes quietly once another project is already moving.

In Hollywood, the difference between iconic and forgettable can be a single commitment you make—or don’t make—long before cameras roll.
