The storm hit fast enough that some people say they barely understood what was happening before it was already too late.
Around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night in Forest Park, Queens, an 85-year-old man, Zenon Reynarowych, was struck by a falling tree and later died. When NYPD officers arrived, they found him dead after he was crushed by the tree.
Citywide, the damage kept stacking up. New York City Parks reported more than 250 calls for downed trees across the five boroughs. In the same storm, firefighters in Brooklyn and Queens had to rescue two people from the water Saturday night, and they were taken to local hospitals.
By Sunday morning, the aftermath was still being measured in neighborhoods without power. Con Edison said it was working to restore service to more than 10,000 customers after the powerful storms.
In the span of a few hours, the sequence of emergencies followed the same direction—trees falling, water rescues, and service disruptions—leaving residents to deal with the consequences long after the weather moved on.
