4-star TE Colt Lumpris flips Alabama for Michigan

Colt Lumpris has pledged to the Michigan Wolverines, flipping from the Alabama Crimson Tide after initially committing last December and reopening his recruitment this month.

Colt Lumpris made it official Saturday, flipping his commitment from the Alabama Crimson Tide to the Michigan Wolverines.

The 4-star tight end from Lawrenceville, New Jersey, originally committed to Alabama last December before changing course this month. Michigan’s staff now lands a prospect with a résumé built for impact on both the line and in space.

Lumpris is listed as a three-star prospect on 247Sports. but his profile has matured into four-star territory in the composite rankings. He has an 89 score on 247Sports, where he ranks sixth among players in New Jersey and 16th among tight ends. His composite score of 0.9085 places him in four-star status, ranking sixth, 16th, and 289th nationally in those respective categories.

247Sports’ Scouting Analyst Hudson Standish described the kind of two-way athleticism that helps explain the recruiting push. Lumpris is hailed as a high-upside prospect who could feasibly play either side of the ball at the P4 level. Standish’s evaluation notes a verified hovering measure just over 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, along with long arms and massive hands. He’s credited with immense bulking capacity and “unique fluidity of movement” for his size. Standish also points to lacrosse as a key multi-sport experience, translating to short-area quickness and redirection. In the red zone, Lumpris is described as a clear threat at the catch point.

Standish also flags what comes next for his development. “Growing as a pure ball tracker” is part of his current work. along with flashes in jump timing and explosive power in his legs as a junior. He was primarily deployed as a slot receiver at the prep level. so he’ll need to keep improving play strength. technique. and contact courage before he’s ready to give quality in-line reps. The projection is that he can become an extremely high-ceiling pass catcher. pairing route-running savvy and the ability to win contested catches. The evaluation adds that, with continued progress, Lumpris could draw looks from NFL scouts.

Michigan’s flip matters for how quickly the Wolverines are turning over recruiting momentum in the wake of a tough season. The program comes off a 9-4 record in 2025 and missed the College Football Playoff. Michigan’s campaign ended with a 41-27 loss to the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl.

Kyle Whittingham will be the head coach next, bringing 32 years at Utah into his new role. For Michigan, landing Lumpris isn’t just another commitment—it’s a statement about what kind of upside it’s chasing, and how aggressively it’s pursuing it after a postseason disappointment.

  1. Michigan is on the comeback tour again I guess. I saw 4-star and thought he was like, instantly gonna start next season but it says he needs to develop or whatever.

  2. Wait wasn’t he originally committed like way earlier? Now it’s “matured into four-star territory” which means the rating changed right? 247 does this all the time, still feels like hype.

  3. This is crazy like the tight end to the NFL scouts already?? Also the article said Kyle Whittingham is head coach next, but I thought he was at Utah forever lol. Anyway Michigan turning momentum while Alabama’s out here missing it… people act like recruiting isn’t political too.
