24 actors nominated in Oscar categories other than acting

From George Clooney’s directing and writing nods to Frances McDormand’s producing recognition, 24 actors have earned Oscar nominations in categories outside acting—showing how frequently their work behind the camera lands on the Academy’s radar.

When an actor slips behind the camera, it’s often treated like a side hustle. But across Oscar history, that “other role” has been the real breakout—writing, producing, directing, or scoring songs that end up on the biggest stage in film.

These are 24 actors who have been nominated for Oscars in categories that are NOT acting.

George Clooney’s Oscar momentum stretches well beyond performance. Over his career, he’s been nominated as a producer for his work on Argo (2012). He also earned nominations as a director and a writer for The Ides of March (2011) and Good Night, and Good Luck (2005).

  1. So basically they’re saying actors get nominated for other stuff not acting… kinda obvious?

  2. Wait I thought Jordan Peele got the Oscar for acting? Like everyone keeps saying he won but for what, because this sounds like director/producer stuff. Either way, good for him I guess.

  3. Clooney nominated as producer/director/writer like that Argo thing, but how many of these are actually “behind the camera” vs just getting lucky in the industry. Also they mention music stuff with songs? I’m confused how that’s all connected to actors.

  4. I don’t get why they keep calling it a side hustle when it’s literally like the most powerful people in Hollywood doing their second job. Frances McDormand producing gets recognized and then everybody acts shocked. The Academy loves a crossover moment, even if the article makes it sound like it’s rare.
