FBI Places Joseph ‘Troubles’ Matos on Ten Most Wanted List with $1 Million Reward in National Guard Member’s Death

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has added Joseph “Troubles” Matos to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in connection with the fatal shooting of National Guard member Chrys Carvajal, elevating the search for the long-standing fugitive. The designation brings a substantial $1 million reward for information leading directly to Matos’s arrest.

The case stems from an incident on July 3, 2021, when Carvajal was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 19. Investigators have characterized the fatal shooting as a random gang-related attack. At the time of his death, Carvajal was serving in the National Guard and held aspirations of pursuing a career in law enforcement by becoming a Chicago police officer.

Authorities leading the manhunt report that Matos remains at large and maintains active ties across multiple regions, including Chicago, northwest Indiana, and the surrounding northwest suburbs. Federal and local law enforcement agencies continue to urge anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to come forward as the search enters a new phase with the enhanced federal backing.

The victim’s family has continued to appeal to the public for assistance in locating the suspect. Reflecting on the ongoing pain surrounding the unsolved case, Carvajal’s mother expressed her anguish in July 2026 regarding the protracted search. “Every day is a different feeling,” she said. “I know someone knows something. I can’t believe he’s still out there. I don’t know how he can live with his heart.”
