16 people shot overnight in Chicago; no deaths reported

For a second straight early morning in Chicago, gunfire turned quiet streets into emergency rooms—starting with a two-hour stretch where police say the violence hit hardest.

At least 16 people were shot early Sunday, according to Chicago police. No one has died from the overnight shootings. and most of the victims—described by police as including young people with injuries—are in stable condition. The majority of the violence unfolded between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

The largest cluster came in Little Village, where four teenagers were injured in a single incident. Officers heard gunshots and found the victims in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue at around 3 a.m. The victims told officers the gunman ran from the scene. No arrests have been made.

All four were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. Police said a 14-year-old boy was shot in the arm; an 18-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks; and two 16-year-old girls were each shot in the leg.

About 15 minutes later, another Little Village shooting left multiple people injured. Three people with gunshot wounds arrived together at Mount Sinai around 3:15 a.m. One was a 29-year-old man who was shot multiple times and is in critical condition, police said. Two other victims—a 30-year-old man and a 27-year-old man—were each shot in the leg and are in fair condition.

Police said the 30-year-old man was shot in the 2200 block of South Keeler Avenue in Little Village, but they have not released where the other two men were shot.

Other incidents stretched across Chicago’s neighborhoods.

In Humboldt Park, a 51-year-old man was shot in the arm around 1:30 a.m. in the 800 block of North Ridgeway Avenue. He took himself to Stroger Hospital and was in good condition.

Also in Humboldt Park, a 21-year-old man was in good condition after going to Humboldt Park Health around 1:30 a.m. for a gunshot to his leg. He would not tell police what happened.

On the Near West Side, a 17-year-old boy was shot around 2 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Randolph Street. He took himself to Stroger Hospital and is in “serious but stable condition,” according to police.

Later that same period, two men told police they were shot in separate incidents and took themselves to Mount Sinai around 3:20 a.m. Police said a 27-year-old man and a 29-year-old man are in good condition and wouldn’t tell officers where the shootings happened.

In Edgewater, police said a 17-year-old boy was asleep in a home in the 1000 block of West Thorndale Avenue when a gunshot pierced the bedroom window and struck his ankle. He was taken in good condition to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston.

In the Near West Side, a 19-year-old man was in an alley at 1100 West Roosevelt Road when an unknown male approached him, struck him in the face, shot him in the leg, and fled. The man was taken to Stroger in good condition.

The night’s violence also reached North Lawndale and Riverdale.

In North Lawndale, police said a 25-year-old woman was shot while inside a home around 4:40 a.m. in the 1400 block of South St. Louis Avenue. Police said the gunshots likely came from outside the home. The woman was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai.

In Riverdale, a 29-year-old woman was shot several times by a man inside a home around 6:45 a.m. in the 600 block of East 131st Street. She was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Police said the man was arrested.
